Hello and welcome back to The Stone Soup Cook!
Well–another week, another crisis.
If you were reading last week, you know that we lost our little dog, Moxie. This week, Mr. Stone Soup had to go through some fairly major oral surgery.
We just seem to lurch from one crisis to the next…but enough of that.
As a result of the surgery, Mr. Stone Soup will need to eat soft foods for a while. Keeping our palettes well-entertained with soft foods for the next couple of weeks is going to be a challenge, and one that I thought I’d share with all of you.
The food that comes to mind when cooking for a patient with dental injuries, is, of course, soup. For that matter, the food I think of first for any patient in my care is always soup. But two weeks of soup?! It’s going to be tough to keep that interesting–and, since I can’t give him anything chewy, it’s going to be an interesting challenge to find ways to make soup a “one-and-done” meal.
Split pea soup was an obvious choice for post-operative care–not only is it delicious, but split peas are a super food. A serving of split peas packs about 50% of your daily requirements of iron, magnesium and potassium, about 200% of your dietary fiber, almost 100% of your protein and about 39% of your carbs. Add in the celery, carrots, and chicken and ham broth base I use for split pea soup, and you’ve got yourself a powerhouse meal, especially for someone who can’t eat solid food.
So–split pea soup was the first post-surgery meal I made for my patient:

He ate two bowls of it and put himself back to bed. I’m going to call that a win for the day.
Tune in tomorrow for the next soup of the day.
Until then,
Peace, love and good food,
Keri
